Core Network Upgrade and Replacement

Replaced old core switches with new Cisco core switches using StackWise Virtual, making the network faster and more reliable, with very little downtime during the move.

Core Network Upgrade and Replacement

Overview

This project upgraded the organization's core network by replacing the old core switches with new ones. The two new switches were joined using Cisco StackWise Virtual, so they work as one logical switch with built-in redundancy.

The challenge

The old core switches were aging and close to their limits. They had less capacity, a higher risk of failure, and no proper redundancy, so one fault could affect the whole network. The replacement had to be done carefully to keep business running with as little downtime as possible.

The approach

We first reviewed the old core setup, including VLANs, routing, and all connected links. Then we set up the two new core switches with StackWise Virtual, using high speed StackWise Virtual Links (SVL) between them and a Dual Active Detection (DAD) link for extra protection. The old configuration was moved to the new switches and cleaned up where needed. Distribution and access switches were connected to both core switches using Multichassis EtherChannel (MEC), so all links stay active and back each other up. The cutover was done in a planned maintenance window, followed by full testing of connectivity, routing, and failover.

Results

- Old core switches fully replaced with new hardware - Higher capacity and better network performance - Two core switches working as one, with no single point of failure - All uplinks active with Multichassis EtherChannel - Smooth cutover with minimal downtime - Simpler management through one logical switch
